RAISING SONS

저는 아들이 셋이 있는데 전혀 공부는 안하고 놀기 바쁩니다. 학교 갔다 오면 공부는 안하고 장난만 치고. 집안 어지럽히고…, 아무리 야단쳐도 말도 듣지 않는군요.
아이들을 착하고 말 잘 듣게 만들 수 있는 방법이 없을까요? 미국에선 아이들을 채벌하면 아동학대로 큰 벌을 받습니다. 조심해야지요. 아동 방치도 위법입니다. 그래도 저는 한국인의 긍지와 뿌리 교육을 가르치려고 아이들을 한국식으로 대했죠.
I have three sons, but they don’t study at all. They just horse around at home and at school. When they get home, they don’t study like they’re supposed to. They don’t do their homework. They just horse around. They goof around. They play around. They don’t listen to me. They don’t listen to me, even when I sometimes  raise my voice to scold them. Once in a while I almost  lose control and slap them. How can I make them be good, obedient kids?
In America when we beat our kids, we are punished for child abuse. Not keeping an eye on your kids is also against the law, it is called child neglect. I am still going to raise them in the Korean way, to give them Korean pride and roots.

In America, when we beat our kids, we are punished for child abuse.  Not keeping an eye on your kids is also against the law, it is called child neglect.

This is referring to the American culture and how it is illegal to discipline your kids physically because it is considered to be child abuse.  In the Korean culture, kids are punished verbally and physically when they are being disciplined. Although it may sound bad, the physical punishment is not considered to be thought as beating the child, but more of a loving physical punishment. This is implying, that here in America, it is hard to discipline your child when you are from or raised by a different culture.

I am still going to raise them in the Korean way, to give them Korean pride and roots.

This is implying that you are still going to raise your kids with the Korean customs so that they can grow up knowing the Korean heritage and have pride in their Korean race.
