ENGLISH  LEARNING IN KOREA

한국의 대통령 당선자는 선거 공약에서 약속했듯이 공교육 중•고등학교 졸업자들이 영어회화를 잘할 수 있도록 교육체계를 바로 잡겠다고 선언한 바 있다. 그리고 이것에 대한 만반의 준비를 갖췄다고 최근 기자회견에서 밝혔다.

현재 지적되고 있는 문제는 교육과정을 영어로 가르칠 수 있는 인력이 부족하다는 것이다.

 

 현재 1년에 100여명 정도의 영어 교사를 차출해, 언어 연수원에서 영어로 생활하고 영어로 강의 하게 하고 있다. 그러나 그 많은 교사들을 영어로 교수할 수 있도록 자질을 향상시키기까지는 모든 교육프로그램, 그리고 막대한 시설이 부족하다.

The new Korean president declared at his press conference that, like he promised during his election campaign, all public high school graduates will be taught to speak English well. He’s going to change the teaching system so it works, and everyone will learn English. He’s getting started by saying that all high school classes will be taught in English.

What’s being pointed out is there are too few Korean teachers who can conduct their classes in English. A few hundred are chosen out of tens of thousands every year and put in English language training sessions, where they practice their language skills and conduct classes with each other in English. But everything is too short to be able to train those teachers and improve the quality of their teaching and the education system. Things are too short in terms of the educational process.

 

◆영어를 영어로 생각하기 (Immerse yourself in English)

A few hundred are chosen out of tens of thousands every year and put in English language training sessions, where they practice their language skills and conduct classes with each other in English.

This is stating that the Korean government chooses a few hundred teachers to learn English and practice their skills with other people to improve their English speaking ability and improve their skills in teaching a class.

But everything is too short to be able to train those teachers and improve the quality of their teaching and the quality of the education system. Things are too short in terms of the educational process.

This is implying that even though the government does this program, it is still too difficult to teach these teachers the correct way because they are in the program for such a limited time.
